Cherie Dortch
is a Mental Health Professional with an in depth training in psycho-dynamic psychotherapy. She received a dual
bachelors degree in Psychology and Sociology at CUNY Queens College, where she
graduated with honors.
Cherie received
her Masters Degree in Clinical Social Work from Fordham University, Lincoln
Center. She then continued her pursuit to further her professional knowledge
and clinical expertise at the New York School for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy
and Psychoanalysis. Cherie has a successful psychotherapy practice in Garden
City, NY. She has appeared on internet
talk shows on Madhouse TV, and has also
had the opportunity to produce her own show which she also hosted, “Men and Depression: From Suicide to Life,.” highlighting the need for more men,
specifically men of color, to seek professional mental help.
She appeared on ABC’S HERE AND NOW, with Sandra Bookman, sharing her professional
knowledge on women and sexual trauma, relating to the Bill Cosby case. She has made contributions to articles and
books: an article on Gratitude, “Why People
Are Happier and Healthier,” and a book written by Dr. Anne Goelitz, “From Trauma to Healing: A Social Workers
Guide to Working With Survivors.” Cherie contributed to the book’s chapter
on Culture and Diversity, and its importance in assisting diverse
populations with mental illness. Cherie presently works as a School Social
Worker in the Hempstead School District, in Long Island, New York.
She created and advises a Girls Empowerment
Club whose goal is to empower, inspire, strengthen self-esteem and promote
skills that help girls succeed in the world, by allowing them to discover and
realize their existing qualities, enhancing those qualities and their capacity
to make healthy choices. Cherie works
closely with various agencies in that community, and is presently in the
process of opening an additional office providing therapy specifically to women
who are enrolled in the WORC Program, The Women’s Occupational Rehabilitation
Center. The WORC program is an alternative to incarceration program for women.
Cherie is also the founder and CEO of “Choose Love For Life,” a not for profit
created in memory of one of her student’s in her Girl’s Empowerment Club at the
ABGS Middle School, Dejah Joyner. Dejah was
shot and killed while sitting in her home in October of 2015, during a drive by
shooting. The purpose of Choose Love For
Life, is to create a platform to bring awareness to the need to love ourselves,
each other and our community.
She has
created a scholarship fund in the same name for students of the ABGS Middle
School, for them to attend a summer
program of their choice in sports, dance, or academics. She also hosts an annual, Choose Love For Life
Brunch, that is held in June during Gun Violence Awareness Month, to raise
awareness on creating healthier, loving communities.
She hosts seminars, workshops and events for
women and girls and will be hosting her first women’s wellness retreat, which
will take place this April. Its goal is for women to become more mindful of
loving their body, mind and spirit.
Cherie is also a recipient of the Excellence in Success Award for my contribution to leadership and honoree of the National Council of Negro Women for Community Service, integrity and Leadership.
